How to avoid writer’s block

Writers block, what’s that?

I don’t know the meaning of writer’s block and why, because I’m not writing for the world, but for me and my passion for storytelling. What I write, I want to loan to the world to read, but when it comes down to it, why do we write? For fame and fortune, the love of it, just a job, felt I had to follow in mum, dad or whoever’s footsteps? Only you can honestly answer that question. I write because I love it. Once upon a time, I escaped the world into my imagination and haven’t left it since. I want to be in the clouds, in that imaginary spot where I can be the hero or the monster and everything in-between. I love being in places where I’m in total control and no one can get in, into my mind that is.

I truly believe writers block comes with subconsciously or consciously thinking, who is going to read my work? Oh my god, what if my mum reads this, she would have kittens. I dare not swear, use violence or sexual references; my dad would disown me. What if my friends laugh at it? What if an agent or publisher rejects it? What if it’s not commercially viable? What if the story line has been done before? What if my style doesn’t conform to everyone else’s? What if, what if, what if. Get rid of them. Free your mind. This is your baby, your creation. Express yourself the way you want to. Take away the chains binding your creativity and even you as a person. Failure comes with not having confidence in your work. Writers block is the fear of rejection, not meeting a deadline and expectations of you.

Think writers block is due to running out of ideas? The book world would come to a halt if this were the case. They are all in you, you just have to ask the right questions and expect the answers. Try looking at a sunset. Ask yourself what you see, describe it, feel it, what is your mood at that moment? Believe me, you can write a novel on a sunset.

For many years, I considered myself illiterate. I couldn’t spell or punctuate and avoided reading books due to not understanding the majority of words. Just thinking about my problem, led me to write ‘Signature for Sunshine’. Another example, sitting in a pew within a church, I was thinking, is this really my ticket to heaven? Again, this one thought was behind the book, ‘The pew is not a one way ticket to heaven’. Living on a farm and looking at my house from the middle of a paddock, resulted in, ‘They died and moved in’. Standing in front of a new building, ‘Aus Com’ came about. Ideas are all around us and in us if we ask the right questions and seek answers.

I never think, has it been done before or who will read it. I write because I want to express what’s in my head, in my emotions, what does this particular topic mean to me and what does it relate to in my life. There is always something to write about. Another example; I had a funny experience with a fly and a rat, these critters got a mention in my book, ‘They died and moved in’. Talk to a monk; they can tell you stories about a blade of grass, which will enlighten and enchant you. Why, because they are not thinking, will you buy it, market it and make a million out of it. They are sharing something precious to them. I use the word share, as that is exactly how I see stories, sharing. Yes, I know, we all have to eat and pay bills. So we are back to, why do you truly want to write? What will be sacrifice in your creation for the sake of outside validation, fears of rejection, the hunt for fame and fortune? Your talent will be sacrificed, your imagination squelched.

Now saying this, being true to yourself and your creation does not mean broke and a nobody; another article in itself. It comes back to writers block and being true to yourself and your creativity. Remove all, what ifs. Remove all, who is going to read this. Remove all, I’ll do what other’s expect of me and take on someone else’s style because they are popular. Remove the box you have placed yourself in. Open your eyes, ears and heart and you will never have writers block. In addition, you will be free to express yourself like never before. Believe me, it works and how do I know? I don’t believe I will live long enough to write all the stories in my head, even if I lived to a 100, that’s how much of the box I have removed. Do people like my work? Definitely! Do people hate it? Definitely! Does this stop me writing, definitely not!

Blogging Community Sites - Useful?

Bloggers need to get their blogs read - regularly - by targeted readers and one way that most of us try to increase our readership is by submitting out blogs to blog community sites. These sites can also provide good one-way backlinks to your website or blog, unlike many of the directories which have worthless listing pages with hundreds of links. Two of the biggest are MyBlogLog and Blog Catalog and for quite a while I got the two sites confused but there are some differences and some varying opinions on how useful they can be. I am also a member of MySiteProfile and Bumpzee, and I think these two merit some consideration as well. Read more »

Your post slug can help your Blog page rank

I have been a little slow in getting to grips with using the Wordpress post slug box to best effect, maybe the word ’slug’ just put me off! But I have done my homework and this is what I am doing now. You have probably noticed that words appear in the post slug box by default and if you leave them, your post slug will consist of the words that appear in the title of your blog. If your post title is long, this can disadvantage you because the search engines often penalise blog entries with over-long URLs (because they are often used in that way by spammers). Read more »

Bloggers’ Radio

What do you do while you are blogging? I confess I usually listen to digital radio, but this week I did not have my radio so I had to be more inventive. Turning to the web, I tuned into Webmaster Radio, a station I have listened to before. Up to six months ago, Webmaster Radio was full of great programmes packed with help for bloggers and webmasters. later the station seemed to go off the boil but this week the programmes have been great. Affiliate Thing and Blog Buzz have been really helpful for me, and both programmes gave me new ideas for blog content. Check it out - you can listen online using realplayer, and carry on working while you feed your mind.

Web host review

Before I got my first website the whole area of web hosting and domain names was a mystery to me. That was two years ago and now I have a web hosting account that allows me to do whatever I want with blogs, websites and domain names all for less than $10 a month. It is important to use an established web host with a good reputation for reliability, and I have found all that with Hostgator. I moved my domains to them over a year ago and the hosting just ticks along without giving me any hassle. I can install unlimited domains and subdomains on my account. I can also use thousands of email addresses and redirects on my domains, which looks more professional than a free email address. Read more »

Moving from Blogger to Wordpress now even easier

This kind of thing always happens to me! When I wanted to import my old blog posts from my old Blogger Beta account, my wordpress installation was WP2.1. That did not support Beta imports, only ‘old Blogger. The solution was to move them via a Wordpress.com account. I think the guys at my web hosting company must have been watching me - just days after I moved my blog posts to my Wordpress blog, they installed Wordpress 2.2 on the servers. No matter, I am pleased to get the upgrade - free - at the click of a mouse. Now the importer simply requires you to have a Google account, an upgraded (New, was Beta) blog, and it must be on blogspot or a custom domain (not FTP).

Technical help desk online

I have met some very friendly bloggers and gained extra visitors since I signed up at mybloglog. This has also shown me some great sites that I would not have found otherwise. Dexter’s Laboratory picks out some excellent technical tips and highlights useful free resources. This week there was a list of Windows Hot Keys and Commands, I know it sounds silly but I had been looking for these for a while. I was looking in the wrong place, of course: I mistakenly thought they would be in the technical manual for my laptop. How I miss the friendly old help desk from my days in the corporate world!

Blogging for Beginners - 2

Of course your blog needs blog publishing software and - you’ve guessed it - I recommend using Wordpress, preferably hosted on your own domain name and web hosting servers. A domain name costs less than $10 a year and web hosting is less than $10 a month. If cash is really tight you can set up multiple blogs under subdomains of your single domain name - this is what I did with my Adsense Blog.

Blogger to Wordpress Move

I am so pleased that even I have managed to move a blog from Blogger to Wordpress on my web host’s control panel. When I tried to migrate the old posts across I found that the Wordpress 2.1 ‘import’ command was only able to bring Old Blogger. Of course I was using new Blogger - or Beta - already. The way to achieve the move is this: open up a Wordpress.com account and import your posts fromBlogger, then export them on to an html file which sits in your hard drive. Return to your Wordpress dashboard and upload the posts using the ‘import’ command. And that’s it - except that I cannot move the same URL’s across, so existing posts have a new URL and I have to remove them form the old blog to avoid a duplicate content penalty.

Blogging for Beginners - 1

I have been taking online to some of my colleagues recently and they keep asking the same question, about how to get started online at minimum cost and how to avoid scams. This weekend my friend Gary H, who gave me a fantastic header for one of my blogs, asked me the same question once more. This is what he said:

“I have to start my endeavours over again. I was starting to work with lunarpages and I think it an easy site. I moved into a deluxe condo. I want to utilize it as a business opportunity. Maybe a social networking site; maybe a recommendation of local businesses to outfit their new condo. I do have some ideas of my own to enterprise online. I viewed your sites and they look awesome…but ..who do I trust.. how do I choose? Could you narrow the choices to 3? I work full time but can work at projects evenings and weekends.”

That is a tall order, Gary, but I will do my best. Read more »

Moving a Blogger Blog to Wordpress on my Server

I have decided I have no option - my blogs will have to be moved from Blogger. You may recall that I moved Kevin the Collie’s blog on to his own domain a couple of months ago. We are still using a blogger template - I had spent some getting a three column template just right and I wanted to keep it. Although we wanted to host the Blogger template on our web hosting servers (in whom I have the utmost faith) it has been problematic. Every time I attempt to change the blog publishing options, the blog ‘cannot be found’. Then I discovered yesterday that Blogger went down completely for more than three hours, just at the time when one of the paid to blog services visited the blog to approve it. I am really worried about the changeover process and I am doing plenty of searches to try and make the blog move this weekend while the blog traffic is lower.

Blog offline - great free tool

Yesterday I was posting like a demon on several of my Blogger blogs, because I am having a day off tomorrow. I got a sinking feeling when Blogger lost its connection, and I felt very panicky. Sure, I quickly cut and pasted the contents but that’s not the same. So I was pleased to see news of a tool that enables you to save blog posts without an internet connection, over at my friend Edward’s blog. You can go over there and download the tool for free.

Blog templates

Feedback is welcome on the design of this blog page: as you know if you are a blogger, the standard Blogger layouts and templates use three columns and are around 750 px wide. A three column layout allows you to display more of your important copy above the fold of the page, so that visitors do not need to scroll down to see it. However there are technical problems with many of them. This one seems to view fine in Internet Explorer as well as in Firefox, so I am staying with it for now. If anyone has a nice header I would like to change that!!

Will Your Blog be Banned?

Some great publicity for big bloggers over at myBlogLog today as Shoemoney alleged he was excluded for exposing a security gap when he discovered their cookies could be used by different members to visit sites masquerading under a different identity. You can visit the site here, and you can see a log of my recent visitors in the lefthand column. I wonder if I will get a celebrity visit soon?

Bloggers Traffic Site

I have joined a bloggers’ network called mybloglog, which provides a great visitors’ display box that I can show on the blog - it is in the left hand column of this page. Mybloglog gives you an attractive profile page, great information on your blog traffic and allows you to network with other members. And I understand some VIP bloggers are members, so it is a good idea to sign up.

Blogger New Layout

You may have noticed I have a smart new three column layout on this blog, thanks to Thur Broeders over in Amsterdam. But I now understand why some bloggers have been turning the air blue with frustration over the limitations of the new system. I am sure Google wanted to make it easier to use, but if you abandon the classic template you lose a lot of control over the content.

Making Money with Blogs - Part One

MyLot is similar to a forum discussion site or social bookmarking site. You write your own discussions and others can join or comment on them. You can comment on discussions that other people have created. You can also upload photos and you get paid, both for getting involved in discussions as well as uploading images. Although the money paid out is small, you can earn money from referrals and you can also refer related discussions back to your own site, so the opportunity to get extra traffic should not be ignored. They pay monthly, if your balance has reached at least $10, through Paypal. You can sign up here.
