Get your website off to a good start

Get Your Website Launched!
There are many elements in a website design project. Elements may include the overall strategy, the site map, site contents, design, coding, search engine optimization (SEO) and additional functionality. With so much to track, it’s easy to let the website design project roll on forever. It’s tempting to keep tinkering and adjusting the various components until they’re perfect. But you should remember that while you’re editing the website, it stays on your designer’s temporary server for testing or on your desktop - and never gets launched.

This is counter-productive.

Moving Domain Names - Lessons I learned

I wrote a post about my experiences of setting up some new ‘free’ domain names, which are now happily set up at my usual domain name registrar and web hosting company. Next I needed to deal with sending visitors from the old subdomain to the new domain. I loaded up the files via the FTP server to the new domain control panel. My big concern was to avoid a duplicate penalty form running the two sets of files at the same time. The web hosting CP allows a redirect to be placed on teh domain, but then I discovered that I could place a redirect in the .htaccess file from the old domain to the new one. The content of my .htaccess file now reads ‘redirect 301 / http://www.top-dog-tips.com/’ Problem solved - all existing traffic is sent to the new domain and I can remove the old files to avoid duplicate problems.

Latent Semantic Indexing - What You Need to Know

Latent Semantic Indexing: What Is It? The introduction of latent semantic indexing by Google meant the end for many ‘junk’ Adsense sites. This article explains why quality unique content is vital for your Adsense success. Duplicate content and template pages are no longer acceptable, and are frequently de-indexed. This excellent guide is a must-read for all Webmasters.

‘Latent semantic indexing was introduced in an attempt to improve the service offered by Google and other search engines to those using their services. Keyword density has been the main part of search engine optimization for many years, easily understood by beginners in website design and article writing. The two major factors influencing search engine placement were the use of keywords and inbound links (back links).

When Google introduced the Adsense contextual advertising program many website publishers could see that there was a lot of money to be made by generating web pages specifically designed to display Adsense ads. Thousands of dollars could be made daily by generating thousands of pages, using template-based page generation software specifically designed for the purpose. Duplicate content was rife and the websites themselves were of little or no use to the visitor who was presented with nothing more than Adsense ads.

One reason, perhaps the main one, for the introduction of latent semantic indexing was to overcome this problem, and to ensure that websites were providing a useful service to those using Google’s search engine, although Google is not the only search engine using the algorithm.

Copyright infringement on my blog

I have mentioned the fact that another blog in our niche had been systematically using our blog posts without crediting Kevin the Collie as author. I tracked doen the web designers and web hosts and write to them in accordance with help and advice from Lorelle’s blog.

Web Plagiarism

I have been sidetracked over the past few days after I found out that all out blog posts from Kevin the Collie’s blog over at least five months had been reprinted, without any credit or backlink to Kevin as originator, on a blog from a site called k 9 training .info/blog. The gaps in the name are deliberate as we don’t wish to to link back to them! I am indebted to help and advice from fellow bloggers and members of my favourite forum, who have taken time and trouble to help us out.

Google, Yahoo and Microsoft team up for Sitemaps protocol

This is important news for all webmasters, which can save you time and make your life simpler.
“Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have agreed to support the Sitemap 0.9 protocol. How can this new standard help you to improve the ranking of your web site in search engines? What are sitemaps and what is the Sitemaps protocol?

Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL:

* when it was last updated
* how often it usually changes
* how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site

This helps search engines to more intelligently crawl your site.

The Sitemaps 0.9 protocol is a new standard that will make it easier to create a sitemap that can be parsed by all search engines.

How can you benefit from this new standard?
Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data to allow crawlers that support sitemaps to pick up all URLs in the sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated metadata.

The sitemap allows you to inform search engines about the pages on your web site. Depending on how your web site is structured, it can be easier for search engines to find all of your web pages if you use a sitemap.

Does using the Sitemaps 0.9 protocol improve your search engine rankings?
Using the Sitemap protocol does not guarantee that your web pages are included in search engines, but provides hints for web crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.

A sitemap helps search engines to find your web pages but it does not help you to get higher search engine rankings. High rankings on search engines are the result of good inbound links and optimized web page content.

If your web pages have both, then search engines will give them high rankings.

The new sitemaps protocol can help you to inform search engines about your web pages. Further information about the new sitemaps standard can be found on the official sitemaps web site. From Free SEO News
